By Briana Hays, Director of Children’s Formation at Church of the Cross

At Church of the Cross in Austin, Texas, we hope and pray that children are not just the future of the Church—they are active participants in its life and mission. This year, our children’s ministry brought that truth to life through an event that captured both creativity and compassion: the Makers Market.

Held in connection with World Missions Sunday, the Makers Market gave our youngest members a chance to become “makers on mission.” Over 30 children from our congregation prepared handmade itemseverything from art and baked goods to small crafts—and set up shop on our church patio after worship. The goal? To raise money for one of the church’s mission partners.

Together, we turned our talents and imaginations into tangible support for God’s work in the world. We ended up selling over 700 items!

The event was more than a fundraiser—it was a formative experience. Children learned what it means to give generously, heard from our partners in their classes about what it can look like to live “on mission,” and saw their creativity as a reflection of God’s own image. Parents, parishioners and visitors alike were inspired by the joy and purpose the young “makers” brought to the day.

The Makers Market stands as a beautiful example of how we can help children connect faith and action. As we continue to build a culture of discipleship that includes every generation, may we remember that even the hands of children can play a mighty role in the Kingdom of God.

Briana Hays is a transplant from California, born and raised in San Diego. After graduating from Westmont College in Santa Barbara in 2014, it was time to head out to Austin where her husband, Calum, had gotten a job. One bite of brisket later, she knew it was the right place. Briana was heavily involved in children’s ministry at her home church, which evolved into opportunities like working as a camp counselor, teaching and leading in summer VBS, and running a preteen ministry on Sunday nights. While children’s ministry is her passion, her favorite kiddos are her two young girls, Maggie and Cora, who are both “pandemic babies.” While she has always appreciated God’s glorious creation, Briana considers herself an avid indoorsman and enjoys thrifing, The Office, and spending time with friends.
