C4SO Welcomes Assisting Bishop Thomas Johnston

A year after joining C4SO, the Rt. Rev. Thomas (TJ) Johnston becomes Assisting Bishop to Bishop Todd Hunter.

After bringing his church into C4SO last year, the Rt. Rev. TJ Johnston will now assist Bishop Todd Hunter in his leadership of the missionary diocese. Bishop Hunter welcomed his longtime friend Johnston, the rector of St. Peter’s Church in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, to be his Assisting Bishop this summer, after the College of Bishops decided at the ACNA’s Provincial Council to offer Bishop Johnston full membership and reinstatement in the ACNA.

“I am thrilled to have Bishop TJ sharing in the leadership of C4SO” Bishop Hunter says. “TJ is one of the most experienced and innovative bishops in American Anglicanism. In addition, he is a warm, discerning and a long-time mentor of young and Spirit-led leaders. Those are capabilities I think God will use as ‘gifts’ in our midst for the good of his kingdom.”

In addition to his duties at St. Peter’s, Bishop Johnston will be on the Executive Leadership Team, and will provide practical and strategic support for Bishop Hunter.

With the blessing and welcome of the College I now look forward to serving Bishop Todd Hunter and C4SO.  I am so grateful and thankful for this opportunity,” says Bishop Johnston.

Bishop Johnston brings with him an entrepreneurial approach to the gospel and a passion for growing vibrant communities of faith that offer the transformation and hope of Jesus. He has spent the last 22 years as a priest and bishop, and a founding member of The Anglican Mission. During that time, he networked with creative and thought leaders in missional Anglicanism, helping shape many of the conversations and challenges we are presently engaged in. Bishop Johnston’s desire is to serve, encourage, and give away all that he has gleaned over the years.

“I have a passion for the local church and the richness of the body of Christ—every piece being essential,” he says. “I also have a divine discontent that’s expressed through entrepreneurial mission and innovative Kingdom leadership – so I look forward to the adventure ahead.”
