How long does the Path of Discernment to Holy Orders take?

The length for the overall process can vary widely, depending on the individual’s situation—and the relationships, conversations and formation that need to take place. Any number of reasons can either speed up or slow down the process. Our goal is to ensure that, however fast or slow the process, the individual is fully prepared to take on the privilege and responsibility of ordination. If there are no special circumstances or considerations, the formal process typically takes about one year to be ordained to the Diaconate and an additional year to the Priesthood, from start to finish.

What coursework is required for ordination?

The Anglican Foundations Program is designed to be part of the discernment process for all future clergy in C4SO, and with few exceptions, they will complete the four courses prior to ordination. If an individual’s ordination is on an expedited timeline, we ask that they finish the program within six to 12 months of their ordination to best serve their ministry and participation in the diocese long term.

What is the difference between a vocational deacon and a transitional deacon?

The role of a vocational deacon is best understood in the context of ongoing service to the Church and the world as demonstrated in the vows a Deacon makes at his/her ordination service. The description of the deacon’s office, duties and calling can be found in the Anglican Prayer Book (2019), beginning on page 472. A vocational deacon serves in this office for his/her entire ordained ministry.

The transitional deacon, however, serves initially as a deacon and then is priested, serving in both roles to better equip him/her for ministry and leadership in the church.

The role of a deacon is crucial to our Anglican ministry, and a full experience of this life as a deacon is vital to developing as a priest. When a person is ordained to the transitional diaconate in C4SO, we follow the historic tradition of one year of service to this office, prior to being priested. Read more here.

Once I have been approved by the Bishop for ordination, what do I need to do to prepare for the Ordination Service?

Once you are approved for ordination, the Canon for Ordinations will begin planning your Ordination Service. C4SO holds a group ordination each fall at the Clergy Conference, and in the spring at Christ Church Overland Park. Bishop Todd also performs ordinations throughout the year for those who wish to travel to Nashville. A few months before your ordination, you will purchase the appropriate vestments and clericals you will wear at the Ordination Service and continue to use in your local context afterward. Read these instructions for planning your Ordination Service.

How do I know where I stand in the Path of Discernment?

The Overview of the Process for Discernment to Holy Orders, found in the Candidate Guide, gives a detailed outline of the entire process that can help
you determine where you are situated. Once your initial application has been approved, you will be entered into the ordination system and database, and the diocesan offices will work closely with you and your Rector to guide you along the way.
