We are grateful that Bishop Trevor Walters, a retired bishop in the Anglican Network in Canada, is helping care for C4SO during Bishop Todd’s five-month sabbatical. Bishop Todd asked Bishop Trevor to step in as a relational presence—dealing with advice-giving, clergy coaching, and any issues that may arise. Let’s get to know a bit about Bishop Trevor!

Tell us why you agreed to serve Bishop Todd and C4SO by filling in for him while he takes a long-awaited sabbatical.

Bishop Trevor Walters: I agreed to offer clergy care via Zoom to support my dear friend Bishop Todd. I wanted him to be on sabbatical with peace of mind.  Given I had pressed him to be on sabbatical I could hardly have said no. 🙂

What are some things you like about the culture of C4SO?

BTW: I love that it is a movement and not an institution. However, movements need institutions and institutions need movement to keep them dynamic. C4SO expresses its movement characteristics through church planting and discipleship. I like that C4SO is not overly concerned about rules and governance but getting people to encounter Christ.

What skills do you bring that ensure the diocese will be well looked after?

BTW: I am a pastor having spent many years studying conflict and mediation. I have had the privilege of being at the forefront of a number of critical mediations within the Anglican Province of America. I have led courses in mediation and wrote a book on the topic.

I have also been a pastoral bishop for 12 years. I think I listen well and have the gift of discernment and knowledge. I am passionate about clergy health and have written on that topic as well.

What do you enjoy about being a priest in the Anglican Network in Canada?

BTW: My favorite part of being a priest for 44 years has been to mentor younger clergy and to bring peace to the Church.

Tell us about your family, your hobbies, your favorite book (other than the Bible!) and your favorite way to spend a quiet afternoon.

BTW: My first wife, Julie, died in 2007. Julie and I had three children who are amazing people: a doctor, a counselor and a teacher. I was very blessed to marry Dede in 2011, and we now have three grandchildren.

My current favorite book is A Burning in My Bones by Eugene Peterson.

I love skiing, golf, hiking, and carving icons.
