As you walk through this Lenten season, here are two significant spiritual formation resources from Dallas Willard. Bishop Todd learned from and taught with him in many settings for 15 years and reflects,
“I once got a glimpse of Dallas’ calendar. Scrawled across the inside page was a spiritual goal of his: Ruthlessly Eliminate Hurry. I of course asked about this. At that moment and over the years I learned from Dallas that:
Hurry is an attitude. It is a heart issue…and Jesus said life flows from the heart, from inward drivers and desires. Hurry is often trusting in our speed. It frequently comes from pride, fear or trying to do too much—cramming things in. Jesus often had a full life—maybe even busy, but never in a hurry. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life. Hurry is not just a disordered schedule—it is a disordered heart rooted in disordered desires. It destroys our souls and keeps us from living well.
I have been trying to eliminate hurry and cultivate being present to my life ever since.”
The Spirit of Disciplines
To enter into the spirit and practice of the disciplines is to move toward the authentic life of faith in Christ and active participation in the Kingdom of God around us. The Spirit of Disciplines is a thoughtful guide to an enriched spiritual life—a book about how to live as Christ lived—directed to those who hope to be his disciples in deed as well as intention.
Renovation of the Heart
Take on the character of Christ through the transformation of your spirit. Experience significant growth in your Christian walk is possible, as you shed sinful habits and take on the character of Christ in what Dallas Willard calls, “the transformation of the spirit”—a divine process that “brings every element in our being, working from inside out, into harmony with the will of God.”
